2. I installed the Advanced Searchbar, but I don't see it anywhere. |
You need to do the following to enable third-party browser extensions.
In Internet Explorer, select "TOOLS" from the top menu. Then select "INTERNET OPTIONS".
Then select the "ADVANCED" tab. Next, click to select "Enable third-party browser extensions
(requires restart)" You will need to reboot (turn off then restart) your computer. Once
your computer restarts, go into Internet Explorer and Advanced Searchbar will be displayed.
*** IMPORTANT: If after following the above instructions and you still do not see the Advanced Searchbar, then please follow the instructions below, (following these instructions will normally clear up and fix most problems overall with your PC and help ensure that the Advanced Searchbar will install and work correctly for you - as well as help fix other programs that may be giving you problems). This tool restores your original Windows XP files back to their original settings.
You will need to run the "sfc scannow" utility to see if any of the files on your Windows XP are corrupt.
To do this simply go to the Run box on the Start Menu and type in: sfc /scannow

Then when the box appears, type in sfc /scannow. (make sure to put one space after sfc and /scannow)

This command will immediately initiate the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files and make sure that all system files are not corrupt, and it will replace any files that it finds that have a problem. This is just like
giving your PC a tuneup (for free!) - many people do not even know that these built in utilities are included with
Windows XP.
A screen will appear to give an indication of how long the process is taking.

If all goes as it should, any corrupt, missing or incorrect files would be replaced by this process. However, as with most actions in this world, things can go wrong and the following should help!
The most frequent complaint with scannow /sfc is that a dialog box appears asking you to insert your Windows XP CD-ROM to continue.

Why does this happen?
There are several settings in your computer's registry that are checked when you run sfc /scannow.
As stated before, the Windows File Protection constantly monitors for any changes to the main system files. These are usually stored in: C:WINDOWS\System32\Dllcache (C: in most cases is the root drive)
The dllcache folder is extremely important so Windows XP hides it from you! To view it go to:
My Computer -> Tools -> Folder Options -> View -> "uncheck" Hide protected operating system files.
There is normally no need for the original XP CD to be inserted as your computer has a copy it can get hold of in this cache.
But, if the Dllcache folder, or part of it, has become corrupted for some reason then you will be prompted for the XP CD - so your computer can get a clean copy!
However, not ALL installations of Windows XP have ALL the system files cached into this folder! You may only have around 25-50MB of files in this folder under Windows XP depending on the settings in the registry.
HOW TO WORK AROUND THIS
As well as having a cache of all the system files on your PC, you should have the I386 folder from the XP CD installed on your hard drive. After doing this, it is quite simple to modify the registry to tell it the source path for these files.
This prevents 99% of requests for the the XP CD with Windows File Protection and the I386 folder also contains many other files that are sometimes needed by the operating system and this stops those requests for the XP CD,as well.
HOW TO PUT I386 ON YOUR ROOT DRIVE:
Step 1
You will need to get your XP CD and locate the folder called: I386
This is a major folder and should be one of the first you see, now copy this onto your hard drive into the system root. For most of you that is going to be C: so you should end up with a folder that looks like: C:I386
Step 2
Your computer needs to know that you now have the necessary files on your PC. This is done by editing the registry. Here's how: (type regedit in the Run box on the start menu)
By navigating to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\
Microsoft\WindowsCurrentVersion\Setup
You will see various entries here on the right hand side.
The one we want is called: SourcePath
It probably has an entry pointing to your CD-ROM drive,(usually D:) and that is why it is asking for the XP CD. All we need to do is change it to: C: Now, double click the SourcePatch setting and a new box will pop up allowing you to make the change to the drive letter of your root drive, probably C:
Now restart your computer and try typing in sfc /scannow again!
Then go to http://www.advancedsearchbar.com/asbsetup.exe to re-download and install the Advanced Searchbar.

→ You might have adware on your computer which is generating these ads.
Often adware can be installed without your knowledge from websites or

20. My Internet Explorer is not working correctly and crashes all the time. It is real slow and when I install programs I get errors.
|
There is no simple way to fix or repair Internet Explorer, nor is there a simple way to un-install it. Internet Explorer is no longer listed in the Add/Remove programs anymore either. Most of the problems causing the program to crash are related to the dll files in the registry that are required to run the program properly. These dll files can become damaged or corrupted quite easily. Re-registering these files is usually a fast and sure method of restoring things to normal.
The following can fix IE and hopefully get you back up and running close to 100%.
To use these commands to re-register the dll files, go to start, then run and type the command in the window and click ok. Do this for each command, and wait for the command to finish. It will display a window indicating the file ran successfully, after which you click on OK.
Method 1: (type each line one-at-a-time)
Go to Start>> Run. Type in:
regsvr32 urlmon.dll
regsvr32 mshtml.dll
regsvr32 shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 browseui.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 vbscript.dll
regsvr32 scrrun.dll
regsvr32 msxml.dll
regsvr32 actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 wintrust.dll
regsvr32 dssenh.dll
regsvr32 rsaenh.dll
regsvr32 gpkcsp.dll
regsvr32 sccbase.dll
regsvr32 slbcsp.dll
regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll
regsvr32 oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 ole32.dll
regsvr32 shell32.dll
regsvr32 msjava.dll
regsvr32 hlink.dll
regsvr32 Schannel.dll
regsvr32 Rsabase.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
Method 2: (cut-n-paste method)
Go to Start>> Run and then Cut-N-Paste the following 2 lines (only cut-n-paste line 1 first, and then you need to press OK after each DLL file is re-registered, and then cut-n-paste line 2 and press OK after each DLL file is re-registered.)
---- LINE 1 BEGIN ----
regsvr32 urlmon.dll mshtml.dll shdocvw.dll browseui.dll jscript.dll vbscript.dll scrrun.dll msxml.dll actxprxy.dll softpub.dll wintrust.dll dssenh.dll
---- END LINE 1 ------
---- LINE 2 BEGIN ----
regsvr32 rsaenh.dll gpkcsp.dll sccbase.dll slbcsp.dll cryptdlg.dll oleaut32.dll ole32.dll shell32.dll msjava.dll hlink.dll Schannel.dll Rsabase.dll initpki.dll
---- END LINE 2 ------
Do not worry if some of these do not run or are not found. It simply means that particular dll does not apply to your version or system configuration.

21. I am getting a GLB4B7.tmp or other GLB.tmp error on installation.
|
This error can be caused by the installation trying to locate advanced features that integrate with the toolbar.
Please re-install and select Cancel when it asks you if you want the program to locate these advanced features.
Anther solution to this problem could be to delete your Temporary Internet Files. As you surf the Web, web page content information is loaded into a temporary internet files (or Cache) folder so the next time you visit this web page it will load much faster having all of the content and image information already on file. Over time, these files can begin to cause problems if they are not purged from your system. It is recommended that you delete these Cache files at least once a month for optimal system performance.
Here's how to delete your Temporary Internet Files:
Open Internet Explorer
Go to Tools>> Internet Options
Under the General option and in the Temporary internet files category, click the Delete files button.
Place a checkmark in the box titled "Delete all offline content", then click OK.
Once the files are deleted, click OK once again to quit this operation.
Depending on how full this file folder is, this could take several minutes.
Or you can simply use the toolbar to have it done automatically.
Click on the "Tracker Eraser" button.

|
22. How can I backup the customizations I made for the toolbar?
|
Follow these instructions below to backup your buttons and customizations:
(this will copy all of the settings, except for programs that are linked to the toolbar from the original install as their locations vary from computer to computer)
Go onto the computer with the buttons you wish to backup/copy.

Locate this registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Advanced Searchbar\Toolbar
Highlight it and then right click it, and select Export.
You can name it AdvancedSearchbar.reg
If you want to copy these customizations to another computer then do the following:
Copy that file AdvancedSearchbar.reg from the other computer to the new computer.
(MAKE SURE ALL INTERNET BROWSER WINDOWS ARE CLOSED)
Double click on it - it should run and add the file to the registry.
If clicking on doesn't work, go into Regedit and select
File then Import and select AdvancedSearchbar.reg
